LAS CRUCES – A Doña Ana County Detention Center guard was among seven indicted last month in an alleged scheme to smuggle drugs to inmates inside the jail.

Joe Anthony Garcia, Ashley Silva, Aaron Reed, Angel Destiny Ortega, Jose Ignacio Caro, Marie Cadney and Dominic Garcia have all been charged on multiple counts related to the alleged incident.

Joe Anthony Garcia, 46, resigned his position as a guard at the jail on Jan. 29 after being interviewed by agents from the FBI, said Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department.

Court documents indicate Garcia smuggled in drugs from Silva, 25, Ortega, 24, and Cadney, 39; to Reed, 29, Caro, 34, and Dominic Garcia, 30, respectively. The three women were girlfriends of the respective men, all incarcerated.

The drugs smuggled into the detention center included methamphetamine and buprenorphine, also known as Suboxone, which is intended to treat pain and opioid addiction.
