Pictured is Father Philip McCrillis (cq’d both). McCrillis, a much-beloved San Jose priest, died Feb. 1 following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. His death sparked controversy after laudatory obituaries of his life spurred following stories that he had been investigated by the Diocese of San Jose for improper conduct involving a minor. Two women filed a lawsuite, which the diocese investigated and upon finding “credible” evidence to support their claims of sexual abuse, settled the lawsuit with a financial payment three years ago.
Arthur Harrison prior to his May 2003 arraignment in Marin County superior court. The Diocese of San Jose released its report February 13, 2004 with the number of priests accused of molesting children over the past half century. Every diocese in the country is doing that as part of a National Council of Bishops study of child sex abuse in the Catholic church throughout the U.S. Harrison has been accused by a family of misconduct when he was in SAnta Clara County, but was not named in court documents here; he was however facing criminal charges in a separate case in Marin County which were dismissed because of the statute of limitations. — Jeff Vendsel/ Marin Independent Journal-
